Deal or No Deal - Lebanon

June 2008 An appearance of peace has returned to Lebanon; but as Hezbollah grows in power, political tensions are becoming palpable. Has the country finally entered a long-term settlement, or are we witnessing the preliminaries to a new conflict? Thanks to massive financial and military backing from Iran and Syria, Hezbollah has emerged as a powerhouse over the past years. Keen to display its power, it has repeatedly had the upper hand in skirmishes with government forces. A traditional enemy of Israel, Hezbollah has recently shifted its attention to Lebanon. Sunnis and supporters of the government have now become terrified to speak out against it: 'I doubt the Lebanese president can do anything about them because they see themselves as stronger than the state. They are a state within a state', says a leader of the Future Movement. Lebanese society is divided between pro-Hezbollah and pro-government factions, which is most visible in the hostility between Sunnis and Shias but has lately spread to other communities. With the 2009 elections looming, the Christian vote has become a vital political battleground. And in some ways the split emerging among them is more significant than the Sunni-Shia divide. Militias are forming in the suburbs of Beirut and tensions keep rising. Is this the build-up to a new civil war?

Norman Finkelstein - Hezbollah, the Honour of Lebanon

Norman Finkelstein, a Jewish American political scientist and author, specializing in Jewish-related issues and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in particular talks about the Lebanese militia Hezbollah and openly supports and praises their resistance: "They (Hezbollah) show courage, they show discipline, I respect that" On Israeli defeat and consequential withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, Finkelstein says:"But the reality was -- and everyone understood it -- that the Israeli attitude was: We are going to knock out Hizbullah. They began planning for a new war right after they were forced to leave in 2000. They found their excuse, their pretext, in July 2006, but there is no question among rational people that Israel was never going to let the Hizbullah victory go by." "There is no way that the United States and Israel are going to tolerate any resistance (to their hegemony) in the Arab world." On the damage caused to Lebanon as a result of the resistance: "It's better to die on your feet than to walk crawling on your knees....how can I not respect those (Hezbollah) who say they would rather die on their feet? How can I not respect that?" Finkelstein then goes on to slam the stances taken by some sell out Arabs who continue to admire George Bush like 'Servants' despite Bush being the man behind the carpet bombing of Lebanon and says that Bush should be classified as 'persona non grata':"Who (would) roll out the red carpet less than two years after your whole country was destroyed by them (the US)? " "You (sell out-arabs) have NO self respect" --------------------------------------------------- How Hezbollah achieved victory over Israel Part 1: The Intelligence War http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/HJ12Ak01.html Part 2: The Ground War http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/HJ13Ak01.html Part 3: The Political War http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/HJ14Ak01.html

Out of the Closet - Lebanon

March 2005 Lebanon may be one of the most liberal Arab countries but this tolerance does not extend to homosexuals. Now, Beirut's gay community is fighting back. "There's no doubt that homosexuality is the idea of Satan," proclaims an Imam. Gay people are believed to be possessed by demons and homosexuality can still lead to a year in jail. But a small revolution is slowly taking place. Helem, the Arab world's first public gay rights organisation, is fighting to end the discrimination.

Beirut Lebanon '07 - Beyrouth Liban
Rebecca Brianceau and friends set sail to BEIRUT, LEBANON. The girls and I discovered all the beauty, history and positivity that lays within the cities core. After everything the Lebanese have been through in the past year, they welcomed us with open arms and showed such incredible hospitality and greatness. Beirut is a beautiful combination of the Middle East meets Europe with a twist of Canada. Enjoy:)

Lebanon paradise

This video shows how Lebanon and its capital Beirut are places of beauty. But interesting how in the whole video we do not see any picture of orientalism and the Arab side of the country. Even one of the interviewed said that Lebanon is a Mediterranean country with a 'touch' (?) of orientalism. I would say, Lebanon is half of each one.

Lebanon Bint Jbeil and Tyre War Crimes

Lebanese Civillian Car Convoys Bombed! This video shows the awful misery of those who are left with nothing. The Israelis drop Leaflets Over Areas..Bint Jbeil And South Lebanon are Targets of the Israeli Terror Campaign... The Leaflets tell the people to leave South Lebanon, that they will be bombed. The Lebanese Civillians try to leave and THEN the Israelis bomb the cars that are trying to escape. They have also bombed all the roads, bridges and fuel stations. Attacks against infrastructure are War Crimes. The people are often to frightened to leave now. What can they do? In Qana it was the children who were targetted and who died. In Bint Jbeil it was the unfortunate elderly and frail who face an agonising time whilst Israel bombs and flattens their towns. These crimes against our Brothers and sisters in Lebanon must stop! Its awful how both Blair and Bush can let this continue, and not listen to the whole world.
