| On The Slave Trail - Sudan
|
May 1999
Slavery in Sudan is condemning thousands to a life in bondage.
Out of the bush emerge a line of 328 ragged Dinka men, women and children. They walk in silence behind their master -- a northern Sudanese slave trader. Slavery here is a tool of war. Raiders from the Islamic north come to raze the villages of the Christian south, from where the SPLA guerrillas mount their counter attacks. Into the equation have arrived Western NGOs. One of the most controversial is Christian Solidarity. Under the gaze of the slaves CS's John Eibner hands over £10,000 for their freedom. Once the Transaction is complete the freed slaves break into applause. Picking up a discarded bicycle wheel, Alek, whose feet have been chained for two years, runs off to play. Modern slavery has ravaged a whole generation of Dinka. Many of the former slaves' homes have been destroyed. And many more have been so disturbed by their experiences they cannot imagine a future. Alim was raped by her master and his friends, "I don't have the courage to carry on living," she says. The pressure to end the abhorrent practice is driving more charities to buy slaves freedom, but intervening may well be perpetuating the trade. |

| Broken Martyrs - Sudan
|
March 1996
The Sudanese civil war between the Arab north and the African south threatens to spill over into neighbouring countries. This rare insight from the front-line includes exclusive footage of Muslim prisoners of war captures by the African rebel force, the SPLA. We see that the conflict is spilling over to neighbouring Uganda. Here the fundamentalist Christian Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) wages its war against the Ugandan authorities. A cache of arms seized from the LRA show they are supported by Khartoum in an effort by Sudan to weaken Uganda, which in turn supports the SPLA. Includes moving testimonies of Ugandan Teenagers abducted by the LRA and forced to fight with them. They were fortunate enough to escape. |

| Hope for the Future - Sudan
|
May 2006
Darfur may dominate the headlines but in Southern Sudan, the story is more positive. After a 21 year civil war, peace seems to be returning to the region and refugees are coming home.
The peace deal agreed between the SPLA and government gives the South greater autonomy. Now, millions of displaced people are returning. "They're our people. They have a right to be here," reasons Vice President of Southern Sudan, Dr Machar. But tensions between the North and South still abound. According to the agreement, the South was supposed to receive 50% of all oil revenues. But some claim this is not happening. "We have received very little revenue", states Machar. Militias, allegedly armed by the government, are still creating terror in the South. Despite this, people like Martha are optimistic. "I'm very happy because I've come home." |

| The Right to be Nuba - Sudan
|
October 1993
Shot on film this documentary looks at the Nuba people, who are caught up in Sudan's civil war.
The northern Islamic government forces are fighting the southern Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) rebels. The government has destroyed many villages and thousands of people have been rounded up and killed. Sudan's government still denies that it is carrying out ethnic cleansing in the Nuba Mountains. An Anglo-French crew managed to fly into this inaccessible part of Northern Sudan undetected. Travelling by camel, guided by the SPLA, they talk to Nuba people who give first-hand accounts of rape and the burning of homes. A former Nuba church warden shows the terrible burnt stumps of his hands and says that government troops burned his congregation inside their church. He was thrown into the hot embers and left to die. The Nuba's isolation means even basic commodities are unobtainable. But their traditional enemies, the Baggara Arab traders, are defying Khartoum and bringing in essential supplies across the desert. The traders explain why they help their old adversaries |
